Aikido

Aikido The Martial Arts Academy Tauranga

Aikido is a modern Japanese martial art developed by Morihei Ueshiba, his goal was to create an art that practitioners could use to defend themselves while also protecting their attacker from injury.  Aikido is often translated as "the way of unifying (with) life energy or as "the way of harmonious spirit". Aikido's techniques include: irimi (entering), and tenkan (turning) movements (that redirect the opponent's attack momentum), various types of throws and joint locks.

Riai Aikido Tauranga has been created to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of Aikido through kinesthetic, aural and visual teaching methods, and also physical and mental agility through challenging exercises and techniques. A student training in Aikido develops at his or her own pace, level of fitness and understanding, so no previous martial arts training is required. It will develop calmness, peace of mind, suppleness and fitness while learning an efficient self defense tool. Above all we aim to make the learning of Aikido interesting and fun.

Goju Ryu Karate

Academy Karate are members of the Okinawakan under Kiichi Nakamoto Hanshi 10th Dan Goju Ryu and one of the founder Myagi Chojun’s last living students. Goju-ryu (the hard/soft style) is an art which combines traditional Okinawan techniques with both internal and external Chinese principles. The soft (ju), internal Chinese style concentrates upon circular movements and the development of chi (vital energy), while external, hard (go) principle rely upon physical strength. The combination of these principles makes Goju-ryu a close-range, fighting system that concentrates on efficiency of movements as well as a personal development. Okinawa-den Goju Ryu Karate-do was recognized as a Koryu (classical tradition) by the Dai Nippon Butokukai in 1998 and is the only karate system to hold this distinction.

A signature quality in this system is the emphasis that is placed upon combining soft circular blocking techniques with quick strong counter techniques delivered in rapid succession. The movements contained with 13 primary Goju-Ryu kata are intended for self-defense and not for sport. Short, circular blocks, powerful holds and locks, efficient punching maneuvers, and kicking techniques targeted to the lower body characterize the art that the founder Chojun Miyagi carefully developed.

Training typically involves basic technical training, kata and bunkai (the kata explanations), contact training on pads, free sparring – Irikumi (full contact) for adults and Olympic Sport Karate for kids and youth.

BJJ training can be used for sport grappling tournaments (gi and no-gi) and mixed martial arts (MMA) competition or self-defense.
