Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu promotes the concept that a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend against a bigger, stronger assailant by using leverage and proper technique, taking the fight to the ground – most notably by applying joint-locks and choke holds to defeat the other person. BJJ training can be used for sport grappling tournaments (gi and no-gi) and mixed martial arts (MMA) competition or self-defense. Sparring (commonly referred to as "rolling") and live drilling play a major role in training, and a premium is placed on performance, especially in competition, in relation to progress and ascension through its ranking system.

"I joined the Martial Arts Academy and started training in BJJ a year ago. Having never practiced a martial art before I wasn’t 100% sure what I had got myself into. Over the years I have competed at a high level in many different sports, both team and individual; yet training BJJ has been the single most rewarding sporting endeavour I have had the pleasure of being part of.
The team of trainers and support staff are professional and highly approachable and facilities are first rate. New comers, irrespective of age, experience or physical condition are all warmly welcomed and the camaraderie within the training group is obvious for all to see.
I would recommend the Martial Arts Academy to anyone looking for a new challenge. Come down, join in and I’ll see you on the mats".
