Riai Aikido Tauranga is a member of Riai Aikido Association in New Zealand and is affiliated to California Aikido Association and to Hombu Dojo, World Aikido Headquarters in Japan.  Our Shihan instructor is Robert Nadeau 7 Dan.
Riai Aikido Tauranga has been created to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of Aikido through kinesthetic, aural and visual teaching methods, and also physical and mental agility through challenging exercises and techniques. A student training in Aikido develops at his or her own pace, level of fitness and understanding, so no previous martial arts training is required. It will develop calmness, peace of mind, suppleness and fitness whilst learning an efficient self defence tool. Above all we aim to make the learning of Aikido interesting and fun.
The Chief Instructor is Vance Karena, who gained his Shodan (1st Degree Black Belt) in 1998 and currently holds a Sandan (3rd Degree Black Belt) gained in 2012 with Riai Aikido Association.  He is a recognised Yudansha (Black belt) by the Aikikai Foundation, Aikido World Headquarters.
Vance Sensei started his Aikido journey in 1993 under Henry Lynch Sensei in Wellington, New Zealand. Vance Sensei took over as Dojo Cho (Head) of Riai Wellington in 2002 until immigrating to Australia in 2004.  Returning to New Zealand in 2012, Vance left behind a successful dojo in Nelson Bay, NSW, where the students were able to train confidently without him.  Riai Aikido Tauranga was started by Vance in Omokoroa in 2013.
